Isle of Oxney and beyond
Sat 12th June , 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
A combo of favourite lanes with some great views across the Rother Levels, Isle of Oxney and beyond. Its quite hilly (with the S Downs Way in mind) with some steady and some sharper gradients and plenty of shade in the latter 1/3 post Tenterden (through woods, vineyards and hop gardens) when we all might be wilting a little. It starts (and finishes of course) at the GP surgery car park in Northiam, close to Will’s Cafe (if you’d like a coffee on arrival and lunch later).
A ride at Level-2b grade, hilly 44 kms, suitable for a hybrid or road bike. There will be a refreshments stop after approx. 1hr 30 or 25km at Silcocks Farmshop.
From Northiam, through Beckley, down to the Rother (mind the swimmers), up to Wittersham, then skirting Stone (unless we want to see the view of the Marsh and the Royal Military Canal (will add 4km), up from Reading Street on the long steady ascent to Tentderden and then to Silcocks Farm Shop.
From there along the wonderfully named Gribble Bridge Lane past Biddenden Vineyard and then Benenden Hospital (East End), a sharp dip and hill up to Benenden proper, past the Bull (unless we are weak) and then cross country to Sandhurst (quite hilly). Then back Northiam via Newenden along the A268 (sorry it can’t be avoided – but traffic should be light). Over the Rother (past the Boating Station), and then one last energy sapping climb that starts to ease off for the last 0.5km through the village and back to the surgery car park.
Should be back by around 1.00pm depending on how long we stop at Silcocks.
We’ll follow COVID guidelines with a preferred maximum of 8 riders.
Please bring your ICE details on a separate piece of paper.
